Speaker Night with author Evan Pritchard

Half Way to Paradise
Mt. Beacon, the Highlands,
and the “River Indians” Before 1609

A lecture and slide show by Mi’kmaq author Evan Pritchard

In this one hour lecture/slide show, award winning historian Evan Pritchard, of Algonquin and Celtic descent, will describe what Beacon and the Hudson Highlands were like before the arrival of Henry Hudson in 1609.

With the help of various original maps and slides he will explain the layers of meanings in the old "Indian" place-names and locate tribal boundaries, trails and river crossings in our historically rich area.

He will relate how elevation is associated with layers of "paradise" in Algonquin culture, and why Mount Beacon was so special in the days before Henry Hudson.
